Joy ..

I define joy as a sustained sense of well-being and internal peace - a connection to what matters. - Oprah Winfrey

I have had an overwhelming sense of joy in my life lately. I believe that joy should be shared. I believe that you should find joy in all things.

I found joy when my patient's mother saw me walk into his room. She walked around her son's bed and her face lit up as she gave me a huge hug while telling me how much she had missed me during my three days off.

I found joy as Scott and I rode in the car on our way home from St. Augustine, belting songs by Sting, Journey and Elton John at the top of our lungs.

I found joy while having an impromptu lunch with a friend whose value is so very treasured. I am saddened that there were years where we were not in contact with each other, yet I am overjoyed that those years allowed for growth and reconnection.

I found joy while wishing two former primary patients a happy first birthday. Twins born at 25 weeks, both completely healthy and absolutely beautiful.

I found joy when sharing with a Jacksonville University student (and new found friend) that she in fact, will be orienting to the NICU during her preceptorship this fall. Her joy reminded me of my overwhelming passion as a nurse.

There is also joy in the small things: a new mat for pilates with a perfectly adorable carrying strap, donating household items and clothes to those in need, napping in my comfy bed with crisp, clean sheets and snuggling with my dear friend's babies.

And I leave you with a picture of PURE joy: Me and my Scottie laughing hysterically while enjoying a day off together and simply, the company of each other.
